Adobe Lightroom is now available for installation on non-lab computers. This program has been designed by Adobe to be used on single-user non-networked computers. In our networked environment, it is a bit tricky to set up, so please follow these instructions carefully. We may not be able to restore your catalog data if you do not store it in Google Drive as per the instructions below.

Prerequisite: Set up Google Drive

  • Click Start -> All Programs -> Google Drive and sign in with your SMUS username and password
  • Allow Google Drive to sync to your local computer

Prerequisite: Install Adobe Lightroom

  • Click Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft System Center -> Software Center
  • Under "Available Software" highlight "Adobe Lightroom CC 2015 6.3 64-bit"
  • In the bottom right, click the Install button

Set up Adobe Lightroom

  • Click Start -> All Programs, then hold CTRL and click Adobe Lightroom
  • In the "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog" window, click "Create a New Catalog"
  • In the file selection dialog, on the left side, click Google Drive
  • At the top, click the "New Folder" button and call it Lightroom
  • Double click into your new Lightroom folder
  • Under file name, enter "lightroom.lrcat" (without quotes) and click the Create button

When you subsequently run Adobe Lightroom, you can start it normally (without holding CTRL).

Caveats

  • If you choose to use Adobe Lightroom on multiple PCs, ensure Google Drive synchronizes completely after you close Lightroom and before you log out. Otherwise your could end up losing your recent work or suffering database corruption. If the Google Drive icon is changing colour or flashing, it is not finished synchronizing (hover over it for more details).
  • If we have to reload your computer, you will need to set up Google Drive sync again before your catalog will be present. Do this before attempting to start Lightroom for the first time.
  • Do not attempt to run Adobe Lightroom on multiple computers at the same time.
  • Take regular backups of your Lightroom database when you are prompted to do so. These can and should be stored on your H: drive so that they get backed up by our regular backup procedures.
  • When SMUS publishes new versions of Adobe Lightroom, they will not be automatically installed on your machine. You should check Software Center occasionally to see if there is an update to install.
