Frequently Asked Questions

What is Papercut?

Papercut allows us to simplify our printing structure considerably. This has several benefits, including:

  • "Find-me" printing. You do not have to select a printer when you send your print job. You can print to Papercut then release the job anywhere.
  • Print release. When you walk up to a Papercut printer, you just scan your staff or student card and the system does the rest. The job is released to the printer you're standing at, ensuring the security of the document you print. This also saves time, as you can print a whole bunch of different jobs, then go and release/collect them all at once.
  • Faster logon times. Instead of connecting to every printer that you could possibly print to when you log in, we only connect to Papercut. Everything else is done automatically when you print.
  • Consolidation of all of our separate print systems. You can print to Papercut from Windows, Mac, iOS, Chromebooks, and SDS. Regardless of how you print, you can walk up to any printer and release all of your jobs.

How do I retrieve my print job?

Once you have printed your job, walk up to any Papercut printer and scan your staff/student barcode at the print release station. Your job should print shortly afterwards. If it does not, you may not be in our system. Come down to the IT department and we'll make sure you're set up.

What if I don't retrieve my print job?

Jobs in the papercut queue expire after 4 hours. If you do not release your job after 4 hours, it will be deleted.

How long should I wait before attempting to release my job?

If you print a very large document, it may take a little while before your job is ready to be released. A good rule of thumb is that for every 250 pages you print, allow 1 minute. Then, when you release the job at a printer, allow 1 minute for every 500 pages you've printed before the printer begins warming up and printing your job.

If you print multiple copies of the same document, add up all of the pages across all of the copies. For example, if you have a 4 page document and you print 50 copies, that's a total of 200 pages. Your job will be ready to print in a little under 1 minute. When you release your job, it may take up to 30 seconds before the printer lights up and begins printing.

Cloudprint and Mac/iPad printing takes a bit longer because there are additional translation steps. Allow at least an extra 15 seconds before and after releasing these jobs.

You can always check to see if your job is ready to release by signing into the Papercut site. Sign in and go to "Jobs Pending Release" to see if your job is waiting.

How do I put my barcode on my phone?

Install an app called Stocard (Android, iOS), then follow these directions:

  • In the Stocard app, tap + to add a new card
  • Choose Other Card
  • Enter name "SMUS"
  • Take a picture of the barcode on your staff/student card, or bring it up on another screen from SDS
  • You can now get your barcode by running Stocard and tapping SMUS

What if I don't have a student or staff card?

If you are a student or staff member and you have lost your card or never got one, purchase one from the campus shop. You also get one for free if you get your photo taken at photo day.

To use your phone to display your barcode, we recommend an app called Stocard.

Other personnel who want to print (houseparent spouses, contractors, etc.) need to get a barcode from the IT department. Come down and talk to us and we'll get you sorted out.

Can I cancel a job?

You can see your enqueued jobs at the Papercut site. Sign in and go to "Jobs Pending Release" to see a list of jobs that will release the next time you scan your barcode. You can cancel any of your jobs from here, regardless of where they originated (iOS, Android, Cloudprint, Windows, etc.).

Can I see my print history?

You can see this at the Papercut site. Sign in and go to "Recent Print Jobs" to see a list of jobs you have printed recently.

What if I have a personal printer at my desk?

If you have a desktop personal printer, you may not be able to use some Papercut printers. Once your personal printer has been disposed of, we will unlock the ability to use the rest of the Papercut printers.

Where are Papercut printers located?

All network printers are now Papercut printers.

Ricoh 7503 - Crothall Staff Workroom

Because the Ricoh 7503 has additional features like stapling and punching, it is not compatible with the regular PaperCut print queue. In order to print to the Ricoh, you must choose "Ricoh_7503_PaperCut" as your print queue. You can go into the properties and set stapling, punching, and duplex settings. Once the job is queued, scan your barcode at either Ricoh 7503 print release station to release your job to that Ricoh copier.

You cannot print to the "PaperCut" queue and release at the Ricoh printers. You also cannot print to the "Ricoh_7503_PaperCut" queue and release to any other printer.

Airprint (from Mac and iOS), SDS, and Cloudprint (when printing from a Chromebook) also have separate queues for printing to the Ricoh printer.

How do I print to Papercut from...

A school Windows computer

  • When you print from any application, choose the printer "\\srprint\papercut" or "PaperCut on srprint" (depending on your OS)
  • Walk up to any Papercut printer and release your job as described above

SDS

  • When selecting the printer to print to, choose the printer "Print to any PaperCut printer"
  • Walk up to any Papercut printer and release your job as described above

A Chromebook

  • When selecting the printer using Google Cloud Print, choose "PaperCut"
  • Walk up to any Papercut printer and release your job as described above

My Personal iPad/iPhone

  • When selecting the printer, choose the printer "PaperCut"
  • Make sure you turn double-sided off
  • You will have to log in with your SMUS username and password the first time you print. Your credentials will be saved after the first time you print.

  • Run the cloud print app (if you are using a version of Android before Kit Kat) or go into Settings -> Printing -> Cloud Print if you are on Kit Kat or later
  • Turn on cloud printing for your user.name@smus.ca account
  • Print to the printer "Papercut (user.name@smus.ca)" from a printing-capable app such as Google Chrome (note: the builtin web browser is not printing-capable)
  • Walk up to any Papercut printer and release your job as described above

My Personal Mac

  • When you print, drop down the printer selection and choose Nearby Printers -> "Print to Papercut @ srcups"
  • You will have to log in with your SMUS username and password the first time you print. If you check "remember this password in my keychain" your credentials will be saved after the first time you print.
  • Walk up to any Papercut printer and release your job as described above

Unable to print from Personal Mac

If you experience an error printing where your jobs are not making it from your Mac computer to the print server, follow these additional steps and then try again.

  • Open System Preferences
  • Open Printers and Scanners
  • Highlight the printer you are having trouble printing to
  • Click the minus symbol (-) to remove the printer
  • Click the plus symbol (+) to add a printer
  • Highlight the printer you just removed
  • Click on the Add button

My Personal Windows computer

  • (Windows 7): Click Start -> Control Panel
  • (Windows 8.1 or 10): Right click the start button and choose Control Panel
  • Set "View by" to Large icons
  • Open the Credential Manager
  • Click Windows Credentials
  • Click "Add a Windows credential"
    • Enter Internet/Network address: srprint
    • Enter User name: smuslocal\user.name (substitute your username)
    • Enter Password: (your SMUS logon password)
  • Close Credential manager
  • Press the Windows Key + R to bring up the run box
  • Type \\srprint\papercut (if this doesn't work, you can also try \\srprint.smus.ca\papercut)
  • When you print from any application, choose the printer "\\srprint\papercut" or "PaperCut on srprint" (depending on your OS)
  • Walk up to any Papercut printer and release your job as described above

Windows error 0x000006d1

If you experience an error connecting to the printer using your personal Windows machine, you need to follow these additional steps, then try again.

  • Download the registry fix
  • Run the win8print.reg file you downloaded, and answer yes when asked if you want to update the registry
  • Reboot your computer, then try connecting to the printer again
