Microsoft Lync is now available for school-wide use (staff and students).

What is Lync?

You can also use Microsoft Lync to communicate with other organizations using Lync and anyone using Skype. With Lync you can do one-on-one or group conversations using instant messages, audio, or video.

Lync is heavily integrated with the other Office 365 services. For example, conversation logs are saved into your email box under the Conversation History folder. You can also see whether people are online when sending emails to them. You can also send and receive Lync messages when checking your email.

Using Lync on school computers

We are still rolling out the Lync messenger client to all computers on campus. On some computers it will just work when you start it (Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office 2013 -> Lync 2013. On others, you will get an error when attempting to start Lync. If you get an error, please report it to help@smus.ca and we will install Lync on that computer.

Using Lync on your own device

You can also get Lync clients for your mobile device (iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows 8) and your personal computer. Students have Microsoft Lync included with their Microsoft Office subscription provided by the school.

Signing into Lync

You can sign into Lync simply by providing your SMUS email address (@smus.ca) and password. You can add other SMUS contacts by entering their email address (@smus.ca).

Adding contacts

To add Skype contacts, choose "Add a contact not in my organization" -> Skype, then enter their Microsoft account email address. If their Microsoft account email address is not @hotmail.com, @outlook.com, or @msn.com, you have to specify it in a special way: username(domain.com)@msn.com. For example, if the user's account is hello@gmail.com, you would specify hello(gmail.com)@msn.com .
