Setting up VPN

Windows 7 - 8.1

Connecting to VPN

  • Enter the following values:
    • Server: vpn.smus.ca:4433

Using VPN

Once you have connected to the VPN using the steps above, your computer acts as if it is on the SMUS network. This means you can access file shares and internal-only websites that would otherwise be unavailable.

Network Drive

You will need the path to your network drive to map it below. It is different depending on which drive you want to connect to and whether you are a student or staff member.

Senior or middle student H: drive \\smus.local\dfs\studenthome\user.name (where user.name is your actual username)
Senior or middle faculty/staff H: drive \\smus.local\dfs\staffhome\user.name)
Senior or middle P: drive \\smus.local\dfs\userfiles
S: drive \\smus.local\dfs\departmentaldocs
Junior faculty/staff H: drive \\smus.local\dfs\jrstaffhome\user.name)
Junior P: drive \\smus.local\dfs\jruserfiles

Windows 8.1

  • Right click the Start button and choose File Explorer
  • Click the "Computer" tab at the top of the window and choose "Map network drive"
  • Enter the following values:
    • Drive: (choose a letter)
    • Folder: (path to the drive as determined above)
    • Connect using different credentials: checked
  • Click Finish and a login box comes up. Enter the following values:
    • Username: smuslocal\user.name (where user.name is your actual username)
    • Password: (your SMUS password)
  • Click OK

Disconnecting from VPN

  • Run the NetExtender application
  • Click the Disconnect button
